This was the worst weather I've ever shot in before! It was windy, rainy, and only 37 degrees! This family is from Hawaii so saying they were freezing is not sufficient to express their fortitude during this session. Nasty weather doesn't mean we can't get great photos!
Location: Russ Freeman Park
Freeman Park is always a great spot because the huge trees provide great filtered light in the afternoon and evening. The grassy areas are very well kept and there are paved paths as well.
Access
We chose Freeman Park because the paved pathways and even ground is easy to navigate with a wheelchair. There are plenty of parking areas throughout the park, but some of the roads are closed in the winter. If you are going to shoot here in the fall/winter then I suggest going to the park the day before your session to make sure you can park where you want. Otherwise you'll have to park further away and walk to your chosen area. I always give detailed directions on where to park so it is easy to find each other in this large area.
Photography
If you shoot later in the evening the light will filter through the large sage trees which creates a beautiful glow, especially in the fall. If you shoot in the morning the hill should provide shade for even lighting.
Exploration
Freeman Park is located on the West side of Idaho Falls. It is close to busy downtown where there are lots of things to do and many wonderful restaurants. A couple of my favorites are: Longhorn, Olive Garden, Jakers, and The Celt. You also have access to the river from Freeman Park where you can enjoy a beautiful walk along the Snake River.
Best time of year
In general, Spring, Summer and Fall are ideal for photo shoots. There should still be some access in the winter but you'll probably have to hike through some snow to get to the perfect spot.
Time of day
This location is great for late afternoon and evening sessions during golden hour. Even mid-day might not be too bad if you can get under some of the larger trees.
Respect nature and property
Remember to always respect nature and property. Abide by private property signs and practice Leave No Trace when you visit someone's land or nature trails and do not disturb wildlife. This is a public park so we may sometimes have to work around people who are enjoying the park.
